Contextual has collaborated with The Center for Association Growth to produce a complex workflow-driven intranet/extranet application to provide a paperless accreditation process for the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS.)
Since this application required a sophisticated workflow engine, fine-grained control of user permissions, and the ability to upload and share office documents, such as Adobe PDF and MS Word files, the Plone CMS was a natural choice.
The student team was able to document the client requirements, and with the help of Contextual, turn those requirements into automated five-departmental workflows and personalized work dashboards within the Plone CMS.
Students applied an existing CAAS.org site look and feel for this intranet/extranet site application, and developed a user guide.
The result was a successful custom web-based business application that will eliminate the need for 2,000+ page paper accreditation binders being submitted in triplicate, and will improve efficiencies and reduce cost for the CAAS organization and the audience it serves.
Contextual, The Center for Association Growth, and UIC plan to leverage this partnership and program again in the future to both address client needs, help students gain real-world IT and business experience, as well as to grow the developer community for the Plone CMS.
